lock screen in os x

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

i love os x, and now that i have it running well on my acer aspire one i’ve been sorting out the little things. the biggest little thing for me is being able to lock the screen quickly and easily. for some reason, even though i have the screensaver set to require a password, it just doesn’t work. i think it may have something to do with disabling sleep, which is practically a required step in the setup because sleep doesn’t work, and closing the lid would otherwise attempt to sleep which would result in rebooting the system. i don’t like to have to do two clicks into a menu bar function, so after a bit of searching i have found my answer.

i found the answer in this forum thread. some applescript to switch to the login window. note that for this to work you need to enable fast user switching and disable automatic login. switching to the login window will suspend your session, keeping everything open and even pausing itunes if necessary. of course, i didn’t want to download Spark for hotkeys. i’m sure it’s a fine program, but it’s just something else for me to download and install and that’s not what i was looking for.

however, i recall reading somewhere that quicksilver, my very favorite keystroke app, could do applescript stuff, and it can do custom hotkeys. i already had quicksilver installed, so i went into quicksilver’s preferences, custom triggers, copied the code text and pasted it into a custom quicksilver trigger like so:

login window custom trigger (click image for large view)

so no matter where i am, all i do is press windows key + L and i get the login window, securely locking my screen. the windows key on my aspire one is really the option key in os x, and in windows i always use win + L to lock the screen, so that is why i chose this key combination. i’m sure this will work with a legit copy of os x on a mac, in case you were wondering.

Update: so, i updated to 10.5.6 and now the screen is successfully locked when the screensaver is activated, so that’s great, but now that i have the login screen thing working i think i’ll either disable the password on screensaver option or use them both depending on how i’m feeling =p

oh no you didn’t!

Monday, January 19th, 2009

i was recently “commissioned” to do a design for a t-shirt based on a particular image of wonder woman from the classic TV show. the image dons the lolcat-style caption “oh no you didn’t!” – making it infinitely funnier than without. the shirt was created specifically for a friend’s birthday, but it was so popular i decided to make it available to the public. i’ve included pics of the original inspiration for the design as well as the printed shirt.

you can purchase the shirt here!

feel free to comment if you’d like the design to be printed on a different shirt or other product.

rock band wii drums with sustain pedal

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

i’m using an m-audio sustain pedal, made for keyboards, connected via a stereo 1/4″ to 1/8″ adapter. it works great, and the pedal is WAY sturdier than the included rock band pedal. in the video i have it hooked up through a headphone splitter, and that works for double pedal action with the included rock band pedal, but holding one pedal down will not allow the other to trigger. i got this sustain pedal from amazon.com for around $13, but you could probably get one at any music store as well. the needed action is on/off, so a sustain pedal works great, don’t try an expression pedal.

at the end you get a little beatmania iidx action. if you like rock band or any other rhythm game, you should check out the original: beatmania iidx. it’s super fun, but kinda hard to get into since it’s mostly japanese. look it up.

Rock Band Wii Drum Set PC Test

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

i hooked up my new rock band wii drum set to my laptop via usb and mapped it to keys with joytokey and then set those to trigger the FPC in FLStudio 8.

no drivers were required, all i did was plug it in, it was recognized as the Harmonix Drum Controller for Nintendo Wii. i just downloaded joytokey, manually set the buttons i found from the xp game controller properties to keys. i’m sure this would work in a number of different scenarios. kinda fun =)

you get a special treat after the RB wii drum video: iidx – the best rhythm game ever.

colorwars nerd rap battle remix

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

so another colorwar2008 event was the nerd rap battle. nerds (anyone on twitter) wrote a short rap and then called it in to a phone recording service that later would show up on the web for people to listen to. after the thrilling conclusion of the rap battle a new challenge was born, the nerd rap battle remix challenge! i used raps from @samanthathecat and @coffeejedi in my remix, made 100% in ableton live with no premade loops or melodies – just me, my korg k25, and live. the lyrical sound quality isn’t that great because it was recorded over the phone, but you get the idea.
